April 2025 was a decent month for Tata Motors. The largest manufacturer of India, that is Bharat, recorded selling 72,753 units across the country. But that’s not where Tata Motors’ responsibilities end, and the company is well aware of this. Therefore, it has inaugurated the 8th scrapping facility in the country, and the third such facility in the Northern region of Bharat.

The recently inaugurated registered vehicle scrapping facility, also known as RVSF, is equipped with advanced infrastructure and technology. It can scrap over 20,000 end-of-life vehicles, on top of another 7 scrapping facilities.

The new advanced scraping facility of Tata Motors is located in Kolkata. It has been categorized as Re-Wi-Re, an acronym for recycle with respect. The facility has the capability to scrap a maximum of 21,000 vehicles irrespective of their brands. These can be passenger vehicles or commercial vehicles, 2-wheelers, or 3-wheelers - all of them have a place to get dismantled.
For reference, a vehicle scrapping facility has to be registered with the government. Only then is it identified as a registered or designated location to dismantle end-of-life vehicles. The purpose of establishing a vehicle scrapping facility is to promote resource recovery, reduce environmental pollution, and generate economic benefits.
The vehicle scrapping policy of the Indian Government mandates citizens to scrap their vehicles after a prescribed years. For instance, commercial or 4-wheeler vehicles are often required to be scrapped after 15 years. Scrapping may also depend on the result of fitness and emission tests.
Features of Tata Motors’ Advanced Vehicle Scrapping Facility
Tata Motors, in the press release, has defined their new vehicle scrapping facility as advanced, adding that it is completely digitized. The entire process takes into account proper documentation for vehicles without relying on physical paperwork. The infrastructure is cell-type with dedicated stations for dismantling different components of a vehicle. This includes batteries, fluids, and tyres, among others.
The advanced vehicle scrapping facility by Tata Motors in Kolkata fosters sustainable practices by guaranteeing the safe disposal of all the components of a vehicle.
Key Comments by Dignitaries
Rajesh Kaul, VP & Business Head for Trucks at Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles, stated that the company was committed to driving sustainable mobility solutions while fostering a circular economy. He added that the inauguration marked a significant step in expanding their ecosystem of strapping vehicles, now with a total capacity of over 1.3 lakh vehicles.
Other registered vehicle scrapping facilities of Tata Motors are located in Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Surat, Chandigarh, Delhi NCR, Pune, and Guwahati.
Mr. Snehasis Chakraborty, Transport Minister in the Government of West Bengal, called the inauguration of Re-Wi-Re a welcome step, adding that it will now support the adoption of newer and safer vehicles that are energy efficient. He also appreciated Tata Motors and Selladale Synergies India Pvt. Ltd, along with other partners, for coming together and facilitating this initiative.
Firhad Hakim, Mayor of Kolkata & the Minister of Urban Development & Municipal Affairs for the Government of West Bengal, called it a meaningful initiative. He said that the facility would help reduce the environmental burden in West Bengal while also improving the overall well-being.
With all that in mind, a major focus is certainly on leading the way in which vehicles are scrapped in Bharat without any compromise in safety, compliance, and sustainability. The same was quoted by Rajesh Kaul in his official statement in the press release.
