You are possibly hearing captain, oh captain a lot since last evening. Or, you are coming across garden-jokes a lot. That’s because Rohit Sharma has retired from the Test format. The focus is solely on his ODI game. But, there is another angle to the game of cricket that deserves attention - the Tri-Nation Series between Indian Women, Sri Lankan Women, and South African Women cricket teams.

Sri Lanka is hosting the series which is scheduled to conclude on May 11, 2025. Cricket games commenced on April 27, 2025, with every team required to play 4 matches each to qualify for the final. The Indian Women Cricket Team has secured a seat for the last lap and is, therefore, in the contest to bring home the trophy.

Quick Recap of Indian Women Cricket Team

Specifically for the ongoing Tri-Nation Series between India, Sri Lanka, and South Africa, the Indian Women Cricket Team has made a strong advancement to the final match of the series. They will face the hosts on May 11, 2025, even if South Africa manages to clinch a victory in the upcoming game.

The Indian team is at the top of the table with 6 points. It has won 3 games and lost just 1 for an NRR of +0.457. The only defeat was handed to them by Sri Lanka, who were beaten in the opening game by the visitors. INDW were able to restrict SLW to a total of 147 when the game was cut short to 39 overs. In response, visitors chased down the mark with 9 wickets in hand and 56 balls remaining.

Sri Lanka made a comeback when it next faced INDW. This time, SLW batted in the second innings and managed to put 278 runs on the board with 5 balls remaining and 3 wickets in hand. However, India retained the top spot on the table based on its net run rate.

The most recent match that India played was against South Africa. A loss would have brought everything down to mathematics for qualification, but INDW ensured that total points sufficed instead. The Indian Women Cricket Team put up a total of 337 runs with the loss of 9 wickets.

The situation was rather tense because India had lost 3 wickets in 7 overs at the score of 50 runs. Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues stayed on the field for a while with the latter eventually surpassing the mark of a hundred runs by over 23.

Jemimah scored 123 runs at a strike rate of 121.78 in 101 balls. That brought India to a fighting total. South Africa ended up losing the game by 23 runs.

Players from the Indian Women Cricket Team are shining in every possible category at the time of drafting this article. For starters, Jemimah is at the top of the table in terms of runs scored. She has played 4 matches and accumulated a total of 201 runs at an average of 67 runs.

Sneh Rana has the best bowling figures. She has dismissed 11 players across 4 matches with an economy of 4.91. Interestingly, Sneh Rana is the only bowler in the Tri-Nation Series who has taken 5 wickets in a single match.

Expectations from the Tri-Nation Series Final

The Indian Women Cricket Team is likely to win the final game given the head-to-head record against the Sri Lankan Women Cricket Team. Both sides have faced each other 24 times, and INDW has won 19 of those games, according to Big Bash Board. Also, INDW is motivated to avenge its previous game’s loss against the hosts.

INDW is better placed in terms of ODI ranking on the ICC website. They are at the third position with 3700 points while SLW are at the 6th spot with 1656 points. South African Women Cricket Team ranks at 5th position with 2720 points as of May 07, 2025.

South Africa may win its next game, but the points they have will be insufficient to take them to the final match. Even a draw would go in favor of the hosts. Hence, INDW and SLW are certain to meet in the finals of the ongoing Tri-Nation Series.
