Chance for ChatGPT to Rebound After DeepSeek Faces Bans
Updated: Feb 21
Key Highlights
DeepSeek has been fully or partially banned in multiple countries.
ChatGPT is certain to utilize this opportunity to boost its presence in several nations including India, that is Bharat.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met Bharat's Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT took the world by storm, and posed major threats to the likes of Google. The tables later turned when DeepSeek entered the market at a lower cost. Thereby, disrupting not just the financial dynamics of Artificial Intelligence (AI) but also signaling that developing AI models was no one’s monopoly in the world.

ChatGPT did face a downward projection when the world briefly shifted to the Chinese AI model. But, now could be OpenAI’s moment to make a comeback as DeepSeek has started facing bans in several countries.
Bans for DeepSeek, Chance for ChatGPT
What DeepSeek essentially proved was that an AI model could be architected for just $5 million as compared to over a hundred million US Dollars. This triggered a global reaction against ChatGPT which went on to create a ripple effect across stock markets in different countries. Investors began contemplating if they were being somehow misguided, or misled, with pitches seeking huge investments.
Now, countries imposing bans on DeepSeek have created a vacuum for OpenAI’s model to fill the gap.
According to a report in Hindustan Times, Italy was one of the first countries to ban the Chinese AI model. This was in reaction to the Italian Data Protection Authority seeking information about data handling from DeepSeek. Taiwan and Australia have not completely banned the AI model. They have either sought stricter regulations for it, or have asked the government sector to refrain from using it. Most of it is in the wake of the security and privacy of users’ data.
India, that is Bharat, has also banned government offices and employees from using DeepSeek. And, the list is now expected to grow.
Notably, this has created a chance for OpenAI to remind everyone about ChatGPT. It did fuel the AI race, almost lost its way amid the DeepSeek hype, and is now aiming to reclaim the throne.
What is ChatGPT Up to?
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has taken charge and is touring different countries. He was most recently in India to discuss AI collaboration with the Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, according to a report at Times of India.
The meeting between them has been defined as a ‘closed-door meeting’; however, the Union Minister and OpenAI CEO did make public statements. Ashwini Vaishnaw encouraged national startups to contribute immensely to the AI segment, and emphasized that the country can develop AI models at an economic cost.
Sam Altman is impressed by the pace at which Bharat is adopting AI technologies. He also called the country an ‘incredibly important market for AI’, as per the Press Trust of India. Bharat is now set to co-host the AI summit in France on February 10-11, 2025. Sam Altman is likely to be in attendance.

What’s Next?
Whether it's ChaptGPT, DeepSeek, or any other player in the AI segment, all of them are aiming to achieve one set of goals. These are effective development costs, reaching out to the untapped or potential market, and making their AI models accessible to many users. Any company that succeeds in achieving these goals, in compliance with security and privacy aspects, will eventually sit at the top of the AI world.
