CCEA Approves Multitracking Railway Projects in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh

CCEA, an acronym for Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, has approved two Indian Railway projects. These span over 2 states, namely Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. The goal is to make the transportation of people, goods, and services as seamless as possible. Chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the cabinet said that the approved projects are scheduled to be completed in 2029-2030.

The cost of the projects is estimated to be around ₹3,399 crore. It falls under PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, an initiative that was launched on October 13, 2021, and approved for implementation by CCEA on October 21, 2021.


Notably, the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan covers a total of seven areas for economic growth and sustainable development. These are roads, ports, waterways, airports, logistics infrastructure, mass transport, and railways.


Details About Multitracking Railway Projects in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh

According to a press release published by PIB, approved projects will increase the current railway network connectivity by almost 176 km. The projects include:


  • Ratlam - Nagda: 3rd & 4th line; and,

  • Wardha - Balharshah: 4th line.


The multitracking projects across Indian Railways will cover four districts, and establish connectivity to 784 villages where over 19.7 lakh people reside. Suffice it to say, this will enhance their travel experience and assist those with commercial backgrounds to transport their goods & services to different parts of India, that is Bharat.

Commodities that will be transported are cement, coal, and clinker, to mention a few. The project will add freight traffic of 18.40 MTPA, with MTPA being short for Million Tonnes Per Annum.


Benefits of Multitracking Railway Projects in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh

The benefits of the approved projects by CCEA can be divided into two categories - commercial, and environmental.


Commercial benefits pertain to expanding logistics capabilities to help businesses transporting essential goods. It could be an agricultural product or a set of containers. With addition to the existing railway network, it is estimated that there would be savings in oil imports. Thereby, ringing down a portion of the transportation cost. Simply put, better connectivity will reduce oil requirements and help save transportation costs.


Another aspect is employment. The press release has mentioned that approved projects will generate direct employment during construction which is for almost 74 lakh human-days.

The environmental benefits of multitracking projects cover achieving climate goals mostly by lowering CO2 emissions. If oil imports are estimated to be decreased by 20 crore liters, then CO2 emission is estimated to be reduced by 99 crore kg which is, as per the press release, equivalent to planting 4 crore trees.


Conclusion

Approval to multitracking projects across Indian Railways by CCEA has been hailed as a visionary move. It aligns with the vision of New India, something that Prime Minister of Bharat, Narendra Modi, mentions frequently in his interactions. Also, it has been hailed as a step towards Atmanirbhar by improving employment and self-employment opportunities.
