What is D.O.G.E, Department of Government Efficiency, by Donald Trump?

The US President-elect Donald Trump committed to shake things up if he returns to power. Cycles to that path have commenced and one initiative that he has confirmed is of D.O.G.E, that is Department of Government Efficiency. Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy have been chosen to lead the department - the former being a billionaire and the latter being an entrepreneur.
D.O.G.E is being applauded and criticized at the same time for reasons being that chosen leaders have little role in policy making plus there is a chance that a department will be slashed simply to fulfill its purpose. That said, a question does arise, ‘what is D.O.G.E?’
Department of Government Efficiency, or simply D.O.G.E, is an external department tasked to advise and guide the US Government into operating the US more economically. The current annual spending of the US Government is approximately $6.5 trillion. Donald Trump believes that it is way too much. Elon Musk, during a campaign rally, said that he could bring down annual spending by almost one-third if he were integrated into the department.
There is little information about what kind of cuts he will make but he will certainly work to bring down the total number of government departments to less than 100. There are over 300 governmental departments at the moment.
D.O.G.E has an official profile on X, where it has shared a statement by Donald Trump, dated November 12, 2024. It outlines the objectives of D.O.G.E as highlighted below:
Dismantle government bureaucracy
Slash excess regulations
Cut wasteful expenditure
Restructure federal agencies
All four objectives are indeed aggressive but it remains to be seen what happens when they are implemented. Excessive expenditure is a problem that governments often look into as a priority. So technically, Trump is on the right path which further aligns with his commitment to Make America Great Again. Moreover, D.O.G.E is a crucial part of the Save America Movement.
Merit for the appointment of Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy is reportedly their loyalty to Donald Trump who would assume the US Presidential office in January 2025. To reiterate, it is an external department that will collaborate with the White House and the Office of Management & Budget. It has been verified on X as a government or multilateral organization account since November 2014.
This is not the first time that D.O.G.E has come to light. Musk had teased it by publishing a post on X which had gone on to receive mostly positive and excited responses from his followers.

The work of D.O.G.E led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy is tentatively scheduled to conclude no later than July 04, 2026. That, according to the official announcement, will be a perfect gift to Americans on the 250th anniversary of the US Independence Day.
Interestingly, an official announcement about D.O.G.E has triggered upticks in the value of the meme coin, DOGE. It has surged by 8.19% in the last 24 hours and is exchanging hands at $0.3963 at the press time, per data by CoinMarketCap. Elon Musk is known to support the dog-themed meme coin which now features a massive market cap of more than $58 billion when the article is being written, according to CoinMarketCap.
