Rohit Sharma will return to the ODI format in the upcoming 3-ODI series against England. Fans are excited to see him as an opener; however, his days in the format could be limited. BCCI has reportedly sought his plans after the ICC Champions Trophy. This comes in the wake of his performance against Jammu & Kashmir in the Ranji Trophy and BCCI’s plan for upcoming tournaments.

It remains to be seen if Rohit Sharma will make his plans public or silently retire after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

BCCI, which is the Board of Control for Cricket in India, has asked Rohit Sharma to clarify what he plans to do after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. According to a report by Times of India, it is important that Rohit Sharma communicates his plans so that the Board can facilitate a smoother captaincy transition.
BCCI is now looking to form a team with players that can commit long-term till the 2027 ODI World Cup and the next World Test Championship. Rohit will be around 40 years old when the Indian Cricket Team lands in South Africa for the next ODI World Cup.

Shubham Gill has been promoted to Vice Captain for the ICC Champions Trophy and the Board is looking at Hardik Pandya to take over the Captaincy. Jasprit Bumrah is a contestant as well but his fitness may put him off the race. For now, all eyes are on Rohit Sharma and his squad with fans waiting for them to bring home the ICC Champions Trophy.

It’s not only the age factor that is working against Rohit Sharma, or is putting pressure on him to make a decision. His recent performance in the Ranji Trophy has also put a heavy rock on his image.

Mumbai and J&K played a Ranji match on January 23, 2025, and Mumbai tasted defeat with most of its star players getting out early. Rohit Sharma could only put up 3 runs off 19 balls in the first innings and scored 28 runs off 35 balls in the next innings. He did manage to beat 2-4s and 3-6s in the second innings but the end result favored the opposition side. J&K ended up winning the match by 5 wickets.
According to a report published on Live India, Mumbai’s Chief Selector Sanjay Patil isn’t happy with the loss and has emphasized that senior players need to contribute more significantly. Sanjay also highlighted that a difficult decision of leaving young talent was taken by them to accommodate senior players, adding that it was disappointing to see them not capitalize on the line-up. He has now sought the presence of Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dubey to strengthen Mumbai’s line-up in the Ranji Trophy.
ICC Champions Trophy 2025
Rohit Sharma will be under pressure in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He has to lay out his plans and also give his 100% as this could be his last ICC tournament. ICC Champions Trophy 2025 starts on February 19, 2025, and will be hosted by Pakistan and the UAE. All the matches will be broadcasted on Star Sports Network with an option to live-stream the same on Disney+ Hotstar as per local time.
India won the tournament once in 2013 and were joint winners with Sri Lanka in 2002. Eight teams will contest for the trophy - India, New Zealand, Australia, England, South Africa, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
